Ocean For Life: One World, One Ocean

Liz Godar

Home (written shortly after the program)

Two weeks ago
We dropped our lives,
Packed our things,
And came here to this place,
Not knowing what to expect.

But we found ourselves
Quickly crumbly
And melding into the Earth,
Embraced by water,
But rubbed raw by the salty sea.

Our pieces lay scattered
Creating a beautiful pattern
Of texture and light
Each piece different,
All rocks.

Out patterns bled
And we stained each other,
Permanently.
And the pattern was all the more beautiful.

And there we lay for while,
Saturated by sun and sea.
And the mountainside
Became more than a resting place;
It was home.

But now we must pick up our pieces
And move along once more.
So we pick and chisel
Our new and unrecognizable forms
From the earth.

It feels so unnatural
That we should have to leave this place.
But Life pulls us onward.
Do not let these new markings
Become jagged forgotten scars.

Let them become the centerpiece of our new reflection.
So that we may impress it on others.
Let us tell the world of the home we found
Hidden in the mist of the Pacific.
