Sea Otters (aka Enhydra Lutris)

Some Cool Otter Facts:

~Sea otters have one of the thickest fur coats in the animal kingdom--all the hairs on an average human head (100 000 hairs) can fit in one square centimeter of a sea otter's fur coat
~Sea otters have no insulating blubber layer to keep them warm, so it's very important for them to keep their fur clean to maintain an insulating layer of air between their guard hairs and their pile hairs. They spend approx 15 percent of their day grooming and blowing air into their fur
~A sea otter's skin never gets wet
~An adult sea otter eats about 25-30 percent of their body weight each day. They eat pretty much anything including clams, abalone, crabs, scallops, fish, and sea urchins!
~They are pretty intelligent sea mammals--they are one of the few that use tools! Sea otters use rocks (called anvil rocks) to break open their food
~Sea otters have large complex kidneys that enable them to drink salt water
~There are approximately 3000 sea otters that live off the coast of BC. The BC sea otter population was hunted to extinction during the 1700s/1800s (their soft, thick pelts were used to make hats...ugh..). The current BC sea otters are descendants of 89 Alaskan sea otters that were relocated to Vancouver Island during 1969-1972.
~Sea otters spend a lot of their time on their backs. They eat, sleep and groom on their backs
~Sea otters often rest together in groups calls "rafts"--they sometimes hold paws to to keep themselves from floating away from each other :)

okay..that's all for now!

Hey Nati... I'm sorry that it's been awhile... Life's just been so hectic and super busy here.
How are you? How's school?
I'm coming to Newport, Rhode Island with my parents this coming weekend. We thought that we might as well visit Brown University while we're in RI, so I thought, why not come see Nati? I hope that we can meet up this coming Sunday! Can't wait to talk to you.

Hey!
I'm good, thanks. What about you?
I assume that you are home in Canada now, right? When did you get home?
What's it like to be home? I know that you probably only have a little bit of time, because you have to get ready to go to Brown, but you're seeing all of your friends before you leave, so are they all glad to see you? Are you glad to be home (even if it's only for a short amount of time)?
What are you doing before you go to Brown?
Miss you.
Oh, by the way... If you're ever up in the New Hampshire area (Brown isn't that far away from NH), come up and visit me! If you tell me you're coming, we have a guest bedroom you can sleep in, and I can show you what there is to see in New Hampshire and my area. I think you'd really like it here! Think about it! :)

Nati!! How're you holding up? I miss you! Everyone I've talked to is majorly depressed... I'm sad but I'm really excited too. I feel like I've learned so much and am continuing to learn, it so awesome. Do you have plans to talk about OFL at Brown or in your community? I can imagine its going to be really different for you since you're switching campuses and communities and everything... I wanna come visit you there sometime this year though! I'm sure I'll be up in that area at some point!
